Mark Flaten President & Founder
Mark brings more than 49 years of deep expertise in risk management and employee benefits to every client engagement. He is passionate about driving meaningful impact for businesses and approaches challenges as a focused, results-oriented problem solver.
Before founding American Risk Services, Mark served as Senior Vice President, Client Executive, and Middle Market Practice Leader at Marsh USA, Inc. He also held the role of Vice President at Berkley Risk Administrators Company, LLC for 12 years, where he led risk management and employee benefit consulting operations, along with the design and management of alternative funding programs. He has extensive experience forming captive insurance companies tailored to clients in transportation, manufacturing, and construction—addressing unique exposures and implementing customized funding mechanisms.
Earlier in his career, Mark spent 14 years as President of a consulting firm specializing in risk management, employee benefits, and litigation management services.
A frequent speaker, Mark has presented on risk management and employee benefits topics to organizations including the Swedish Trade Council in Stockholm, the National Accountants Association, the Minnesota Self Insurers Association, and the CPA Society of Minnesota.
For over 25 years, he has been actively involved in civic leadership, serving on various boards of directors—including Volunteers of America, Inc. He currently serves as President of the Mercedes Benz Club of America – Twin Cities Section and as a Board Member for Volunteers of America in Minnesota.
Mark holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry and has completed numerous professional courses through the Insurance Institute of America.
