Mark Flaten President & Founder
Mark brings nearly five decades of specialized expertise in risk management and employee benefits to every client engagement. A focused, results-driven problem solver, Mark is passionate about delivering meaningful, measurable outcomes that help businesses thrive.
Before founding American Risk Services, Mark served as Senior Vice President and Middle Market Practice Leader at Marsh USA, Inc. He also spent 12 years as Vice President at Berkley Risk Administrators Company, LLC, where he led risk management and employee benefits consulting operations and oversaw the design and administration of alternative funding programs. His experience includes forming captive insurance companies for clients in the transportation, manufacturing, and construction industries — developing highly customized solutions for complex and industry-specific risks.
Earlier in his career, Mark served for 14 years as President of a consulting firm specializing in risk management, employee benefits, and litigation management services.
A respected industry speaker, Mark has presented on risk management and employee benefits topics to prestigious audiences, including the Swedish Trade Council in Stockholm, the National Accountants Association, the Minnesota Self Insurers Association, and the CPA Society of Minnesota.
For more than 40 years, Mark has demonstrated a deep commitment to civic leadership. He has served on numerous boards of directors, notably with Volunteers of America, Inc. — one of the largest comprehensive human services organizations in the United States — where he held positions as Board Member, Treasurer, and Board Chair for the Minnesota chapter. He also served as President of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America, Twin Cities Section.
Mark holds a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and has completed extensive professional development through the Insurance Institute of America.
